FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are side tipper trailers used for?
Side tippers are primarily used for bulk haulage of loose materials across mining, quarrying, construction, agriculture, and waste management. In Western Australia, they are widely used to haul heavy minerals — including iron ore, phosphate, and coal — loaded onto trucks for transport from extraction sites to crushing plants and stockpiles. Side tippers are also a common choice for sand, gravel, grain, and quarry aggregates — any material that needs to be discharged quickly and cleanly at a tipping site. The side-discharge action can also create a windrow of material along the unloading run, which reduces the need for additional levelling machinery on civil and road construction projects.
Are AAA Trailers' side tippers suitable for corrosive materials like salt?
Yes. While side tippers are most commonly used for ore, aggregates, and grain, they're also suited to materials like salt, which can be corrosive to bowl surfaces and hardware over time. Preventing contamination between loads is important in these applications. Appropriate load guards and cover selection both play a role in protecting the trailer and the integrity of subsequent loads. Our Perth team can advise on the best cover option and maintenance practices for your specific material type.
What's the difference between a hydraulic lid and an electric roll tarp?
Both cover options protect your load during transit, but they work differently across side tippers. A hydraulic lid is operated from the cab and provides a solid, sealed cover, well-suited to wet, dusty, or fine materials that need full containment. An electric roll tarp uses a remote-operated rolling mechanism where the opening of the tarp takes only seconds, keeping operators safely on the ground. The electric roll tarp side tipper trailer models in our range also carry a slightly lower tare weight, improving payload efficiency. The right choice for your side tippers depends on your material type, operating environment, and preference for cover speed versus seal quality.
What body lengths are available in AAA Trailers' side tipper range?
Our Perth range of side tippers covers three body configurations: the Lead (A) with a 9.7m body and 5m bowl, the 9.75m model with an 8m bowl, and the 10.29m model with an 8.5m bowl. Each body is built with a flat floor, reinforced bowl walls, and variable body panel thicknesses: 5–6mm on the floor and door, 8mm front and rear, and 4mm side panels, all rated to 47 tonnes ATM and 23.5 tonnes GTM. We also stock an end tipper as an alternative to our side tippers for operations where rear discharge is preferred.
What heavy duty steel are AAA Trailers' side tippers fabricated from?
AAA Trailers' side tippers are fabricated from 450 Grade heavy duty steel throughout the bowl structure, giving each side tipper trailer the strength to handle demanding load weights across harsh working conditions. The floor and door panels are 5–6mm thick, front and rear panels 8mm, and side panels 4mm, each section dimensioned to where it absorbs the most impact. This targeted approach concentrates material where side tippers need it most, without adding unnecessary tare weight. All units are assembled at our Australian workshops using Australian Standards Approved Steel.
Why do operators prefer side tippers over rear tippers in WA?
Side tippers offer several operational advantages over conventional rear tippers, particularly in WA's mining and bulk haulage sectors. The side-discharge motion puts significantly less strain on the hydraulic system and chassis compared to rear tipping, which reduces long-term wear and maintenance costs. Side tippers also have a lower centre of gravity during the tipping cycle, making them safer on uneven terrain and sloped ground. They can also operate in confined spaces where rear tippers can't — including under power lines, in tunnels, and on tight civil construction sites, making side tippers the more flexible choice across varied job environments.
What suspension and braking systems are fitted?
All AAA Trailers side tippers are fitted with K-Hitch 22.5" drum brake axles, FUWA FW520 8-leaf spring suspension, and an EBS (Electronic Braking System) brake kit. The spring suspension setup is well suited to the heavy, abrasive operating conditions faced by prime mover trucks across WA's mining and quarry routes. EBS provides controlled, consistent braking across all axle groups — an important safety feature for side tippers running fully loaded on site access roads and regional highways. Full LED lighting is standard across the range, keeping side tippers visible and compliant in all conditions.
What optional extras are available?
AAA Trailers' side tippers come with a range of optional extras to match your fleet and operational requirements. Select from road train coupling kits, hub odometers, alloy wheels, signage, and dual spare wheel carriers. The 2-speed landing legs are standard on all side tippers. Contact our Perth team to discuss which side tipper trailer options suit your specific operation.
Can I get a side tipper in a custom colour?
Yes. You can customise your side tippers with a paint colour of your choice. Any colour requested is applied at no extra charge. Custom builds do take longer than standard stock units as they're built from the ground up, so get in touch with our Perth team early if you have specific requirements.
